How much does a family lawyer cost?

This is a valid question but a very difficult one to answer without knowing the circumstances of your case.

Traditionally, family lawyers have operated on a time-based billing model, meaning the more time spent on a file the more the client was charged.

At East & Associates we endeavour to provide fix fee quotes where possible.  This means clients don’t have to worry about unexpected legal bills and creates an incentive to deal with matters efficiently.

For certain discrete tasks, like drafting a will, applying for probate, or drafting a pre-nuptial agreement, we can usually give you a fixed fee quote after your initial consultation (see website for price guide).

For other work, like representation in the Family Court, we will need to get a detailed understanding of your case before we can provide you with a quote. Even then, we can usually only provide a quote for representing you in a certain aspect of your case (such as drafting initial documents, preparation and representation at first hearing or representation at mediation). This, among other things, is because your case could be resolved by agreement at an early stage on the Court process (as happens in most cases) or, conversely, complex issues could arise during your case which were not foreseen initially.

We believe that this billing strategy strikes the right balance between giving clients some peace of mind about their legal costs, whilst also paying due regard to the unpredictability of the litigation process.
